오늘은 네이트 더 그레이트 5권, Nate the Great and the Sticky Case에 나오는 단어를 정리해 보았습니다.

 

부지런히 단어 정리를 하려고 했는데 최근에 다른 일에 집중하느라 단어 정리가 늦었습니다. 영어 원서를 읽기 시작하면서 블로그 운영도 같이 시작했더니 블로그 생각에 이렇게라도 다시 돌아오게 되네요. :) 이제 다시 부지런히 읽고 열심히 공부해야겠습니다.

▶ 이 문장의 a sticky case의 경우, sticky를 difficult의 뜻으로 해석하는 게 맞을 것 같아요.
단어의 기본 뜻 자체로 해석해서 '끈적거리는 사건'이라고 생각할 수도 있겠지만, 네이트가 이 사건을 맡으면서 ① "It is hard to find something that small."라고 말한 것과 ② 네이트가 우표의 뒷면이 물이 묻을 경우 매우 끈적거린다는 것을 생각하기 전에 a sticky case라고 언급한 점으로 보아, 위 문장에서 '끈적거리는 사건'이라기보다는 '(해결하기) 어려운[힘든] 사건'으로 해석하는 게 맞을 것 같아요.

그래서 엄마에게 남긴 메모에 적힌 'I am on a sticky case.'는 '어려운 사건을 수사 중이에요[까다로운 사건을 맡았어요].' 이런 의미일 것 같습니다. 책 제목에 쓰인 sticky는 우표의 뒷면이 끈적거리는 것과 우표가 너무 작아서 찾기 힘든 사건이라는 두 가지의 뜻을 모두 포함하는 것 같습니다.

▶ 직역하면 '나를 놀라게 해 줘.' 이런 뜻이겠지만, 의역으로 '아무거나', 즉 '당신이 무엇을 선택하든 상관없으니 당신이 선택해 주세요.'라는 의미로 쓰인다고 합니다.
